That being said, the idea of the I Ching influencing or shaping the future is an interesting concept worth exploring. Its purpose is to provide insight and offer guidance based on the understanding of the present situation. Traditionally, the I Ching is seen as a tool for understanding and adapting to the flow of events rather than directly altering them. While the I Ching is widely respected for its wisdom and guidance, the notion that it has the power to change the future is not a widely accepted interpretation. (And sometimes you need a great mechanic more than you do a shaman, great or otherwise.) can all be great men and women if I need a doctor, mechanic, builder, or therapist. 'meet the great'? In some instances it could be to seek out the best (or great) person for the task at hand: a doctor, mechanic, builder, therapist. I always think of it as 'meeting the great' - which makes it a bit more self-explanatory, at least for me: do I decide to be petty and seek revenge, or. I can't say the other north-east beach walk would have been bad, but that's what I did. I have two favorite beach walks and I decided to go to the beach that is west and south of me (more or less). ![]() In one instance, I took it more literally: I did a morning reading - often just asking, tell me something I need to know/do/experience today' and I got advice to go south-west. So, it may simply be saying, 'given all you know (the facts), make the best decision you can, ergo, 'go south and west (towards clarity and home) young women!' North was considered the land of darkness and the barbarians (think of the Great Wall along China's northern borders) and East was the direction of the Shang. South is traditionally associated with sunlight and clarity and the Zhou homeland was West of the Shang homeland, which the Zhou eventually overtook. In one respect it could be the Yi suggesting that you make a choice - to go one way or another, to make this decision and not that one. Many translators think that the words are 'south and west' and 'north and east' - and not southwest and northeast. ![]() Here's a few possible ways to look at it: ![]() What these sayings 'mean' is based - I think - on your understanding, and most importantly, what you are asking or querying the Yi about. The Yijing 'speaks' to us through imagery, myth and metaphor. ![]() It works for some hexagrams and perhaps not others.īut with some, like hexagram 1 line 2, the image I get is not to actually go somewhere, or one has lost the potential being offered, but to still go somewhere in that one reaches through the veils to the wisdom of the great person on the other side. From within the emptiness one might meet with the true person, our own immortal self.īecause of this, and the idea of the realms of houtian and xiantian and using the changes to reach through the gate between them, I like to interpret 'great person' as one's own higher self. It is also from within our emptiness that our true spirit can be found, after peeling back all the layers. Mountain is one I'm not completely clear on the meaning now - iirc it's where things are not found, even though it still has an important role to play in our turning back, but SW is more common with a clearer meaning.Įarth is all yin, and represents humility. NE and SW then align with the Trigrams of Mountain and Earth. Northeast and Southwest refer to the directions of the king wen arrangement of the bagua. ![]()
